The Town of Newmarket is closing several downtown streets Saturday, Nov. 11 as the Royal Canadian Legion holds its annual Remembrance Day Parade.
The streets will be closed from 10 a.m. to noon as the parade goes through the community.
The closures include:
- Doug Duncan Drive from Timothy Street to Water Street
- Water Street from Doug Duncan to Main Street
- Eagle Street from Main Street to Church Street
- Church Street from Main Street to D'Arcy Street
The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 426 Newmarket and Newmarket Veterans Association will hold their Remembrance Day service at Veterans Memorial Park on D’Arcy Street and Church Street. Members of the legion will be forming up at Doug Duncan Drive at 10 a.,m., before marching off at 10:30 a.m.
The poppy campaign is well underway after the local legion began with a poppy flag-raising Oct. 27. This week marks Veterans’ Week, leading into Remembrance Day ceremonies across the country.
York Region will be lowering flags to half-mast Nov. 11 to honour veterans, along with having its own virtual service Nov. 10.
“It is a time for each of us to develop a deeper understanding of the vital contributions our veterans have made to the country we call home,” York chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson said in a news release marking Veterans’ Week. “I extend my deepest gratitude to our veterans, Canadians in uniform and their families. We are truly grateful.”
