Newmarket library gets new look with rebrand

Newmarket Public Library is getting new branding to help residents discover “everything and anywhere."

The new brand featuring a design in the shape of a book aims to better promote the library and its modern services, according to CEO Tracy Munusami.

“The new brand is about telling our story,” Munusami said. “We want the community to be welcome, and to inspire curiosity and discovery.”

The rebranding — the last one was done 17 years ago — comes as part of the library’s new strategic plan released last year. The organization is working toward modernizing, with added emphasis on its services beyond book lending, as well as offering programs outside its main building.

The rebrand comes with a new tagline: “discover anything and everywhere.” It is another way to remind the community what the library offers beyond book borrowing, Munusami said.

“We’re trying to get outside of our four walls and reach the community where they are,” she said.

The non-book services include a lendery offering tools, games and equipment, a maker hub, courses, streaming and drop-in programs. The library also has plans to do more outreach, with pop-up programs in parks and elsewhere.

“I’ve been on the board a long time, and I really like the direction that we’re going,” Councillor Kelly Broome said. “I really do believe that the best is yet to come … It is a big change, but a good one.”

Newmarket Councillor Victor Woodhouse, who also serves on the board, said the library has had its struggles keeping services current.

“It was really difficult to get us past that point,” he said. “They need to be more than books but it was difficult to really have that mindset that we need to look forward and ask what our community wants. I can tell you, as a library board member, it’s an exciting time … The branding is really just a small part of it.”

Newmarket Mayor John Taylor thanked the library for the effort.

“You can see the energy behind it, you can see the potential behind it,” he said. “It’s very exciting."
