The Metrolinx GO expansion project will cause power outages and closures on Queen Street in Newmarket next week.
Newmarket-Tay Power Distribution will be relocating an existing electrical line, including hydro poles, across the rail tracks at Queen Street. This is being done as part of the Metrolinx GO expansion, to facilitate its electrification.
The move will mean that 164 customers will be without power for six-hour periods Aug. 16 to 18. Portions of the street will also be closed as the work is ongoing.
“To complete this work in a safe manner, it has been identified that three power outages, six hours each in duration, are required,” NT Power said. “We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause.”
Metrolinx is working on expanding its Barrie and other rail lines through electric trains. It promises increased speed with an all-day, two-way 15-minute service.
The work will also involve a street closure. Queen Street between Robertson Place and Concession Street will close from Aug. 15 to 18, from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Vehicle traffic will be detoured southward via Main, Water and Prospect streets. It will also redirect pedestrian traffic to the north sidewalk of Queen Street.
NT Power has also scheduled an alternate date in the case that work cannot proceed on any day next week. There will be an outage Aug. 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in that instance.
NT Power will post live updates for the outages on the outage dashboard on its website. You can contact its operations department at 905-895-2309, ext. 2 for more information.
