Newmarket girl among 16 YRDSB students celebrated for success

A Newmarket student is among 16 outstanding students honoured at the York Region District School Board’s annual Celebrating Student Success ceremony.

Kaylee Abbey, a Maple Leaf Public School student, is active and involved in her school community, including the band, knitting club, Black Student Alliance and volunteering as a lunch monitor, according to a YRDSB website.

"She supports the multilingual language learning community in her school, making sure students know where the materials are, inviting them to join group activities, explaining things in easy-to-understand vocabulary and supporting with Google Translate. Further, she takes initiative to help around the classroom, including getting out the snack bin, setting the classroom timer, organizing the shelves and more."

“We are so proud of each of the award recipients from this year’s Celebrating Student Success,” said YRDSB board chair Ron Lynn in a news release. “We recognize that education is a collaborative effort between students, families, caregivers, educators, and support staff, so we thank everyone involved for their efforts. We are honoured to be a part of each student’s journey.”

“We have so many students who are deserving of recognition at YRDSB,” said director of education Bill Cober. “These 16 students have each had different paths to get here. However, they all share one thing, and that is their commitment to excellence. Their successes serve as inspiration for those who will follow them as the YRDSB students of the future.”
