Newmarket-Aurora MP Tony Van Bynen is joining some colleagues in calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to step down.

Trudeau is facing pressure after two high-profile cabinet ministers resigned, and now other MPs have begun to call for his resignation.

Van Bynen said Trudeau has had the opportunity to carry forward the wishes of his party.

“I believe the prime minister has had ample opportunity to demonstrate a renewed leadership and to address the concerns of many members of his caucus,” Van Bynen said. “Unfortunately, I do not feel that he has delivered on the discussions we had through the summer and the fall and so the time has arrived for him to resign — to provide opportunity for new leadership and allow a renewal of our party to take place."

News outlets such as the Toronto Star have reported that dozens of Liberal MPs are calling for Trudeau’s resignation. This follows Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland's resignation last week. Other ministers have announced they are not running again in the election, including Minister of Housing Sean Fraser and Minister of Northern Affairs Dan Vandal.

Van Bynen himself is retiring and plans to only serve until the end of the term.

The MP has not generally criticized his party’s governance or the prime minister during his term, spreading the message about new government policies.

A recent Village Media poll found that most readers felt the need for a new election and that Trudeau should resign.

The timing of a new election is uncertain but NDP leader Jagmeet Singh has announced the party will bring forward a non-confidence motion sometime after Parliament comes back into session next year.
