The federal Newmarket-Aurora Liberals are getting ready for the next election following the grand opening celebration of their campaign office at 207 Main St. S.
The campaign team for candidate Jennifer McLachlan gathered March 9 to watch the election of new Liberal leader Mark Carney, who was the candidate she endorsed. Now, the team is readying to work on getting McLachlan and Carney elected.
“I love what the team has done with the office,” McLachlan said in a news release. “It’s warm and welcoming, and we want people to know they’re welcome to just walk in and share what’s on their mind.”
Incumbent Newmarket-Aurora Liberal MP Tony Van Bynen is retiring once the term ends.
McLachlan will be vying for the seat against Conservative candidate Sandra Cobena, while other parties still have yet to publicly announce candidates. The Cobena team said it will soon be officially opening a campaign office at 171 Main St. S.
At the McLachlan office, there is a “speaker’s corner” where people can video record their questions and have their concerns shared with a broader audience.
“That’s just one of many ways we’ve made the office an open space for the public,” Tom Pearson, media lead for the team, said in a news release. “You’re going to see us up and about Aurora and Newmarket, but having the office on Main Street in Newmarket makes it easy to connect with us.”
McLachlan expressed that she believed in Carney, and the campaign team said she was out weeks ago with business cards endorsing him.
“Any one of the four (leadership candidates) would have been great, but I’ve bet on my instincts all my life, and I knew in my bones that he was the right choice,” McLachlan said.
