Newmarket tennis club players have their new home as the municipality opened a brand new indoor facility Nov. 10.
The municipality opened the new Keith Davis Tennis Centre on Bennington Road, featuring 10 tennis courts, eight of which will be domed for indoor use throughout the winter. The new facility comes into place after months of construction.
The Newmarket Community Tennis Club members and dignitaries were on hand for the soft opening, with a “grand” opening celebration planned after the winter.
“Can’t wait for our (Newmarket Community Tennis Club) members to have the chance to play on opening day,” the club said on social media, adding thanks to the municipality “for seeing this immense project through to opening day!”
The new facility was funded as part of a deal with the Shining Hill developer. It comes after the town demolished the longtime downtown tennis facility last spring in to open up more parking space to meet demand in the downtown core.
The facility can only currently be used by club members. The clubhouse for the facility is not yet operational, with trailers planned for use during this first winter season according to the municipal website.
The town is offering winter club memberships at a pro-rated fee for the shorter season. Membership will be required to participate in programming at the facility, except for group lessons open to everyone. Season memberships will cost $265 for residents and $295 for non-residents.
