The Town of Newmarket maintained its number of employees on the 2021 public sector salary disclosure released March 25 for those making more than $100,000 per year.
The province released the Sunshine List late Friday afternoon, which included 186 employees from the Town of Newmarket, the same number as last year. The list also featured 3,052 employees from York Region — up from 3,010 the year before — and 503 employees of Southlake Regional Health Centre, down from 662 in 2020.
Newmarket CAO Ian McDougall topped Newmarket's list, making $222,090 salary in 2021 in a year of transition for the town’s CAO position. Former CAO Jagdeep Sharma brought in $265,000 in a full year in the role in 2020.
The top five earners in Newmarket in 2021 are:

- Development and infrastructure commissioner Peter Noehammer, $208,729 ($208,064 in 2020)
- Corporate services commissioner Esther Armchuk, $208,729 ($205,344 in 2020)
- Fire services platoon chief Dan Waters, $185,747 ($169,688 in 2020)
- Fire Chief Ian Laing, $185,339 ($184,809 in 2020).
York Region's list was topped by former medical officer of health Karim Kurji rather than its CAO. The 3,052 total includes employees with York Regional Police and York Region Transit. Here are its top five earners:
- Medical officer of health Dr. Karim Kurji, $379,720 plus $10,594 in benefits ($319,474, plus $12,573 in benefits in 2020)
- Director of corporate communications Patrick Casey, $330,512 ($300,843 in 2020)
- CAO Bruce Macgregor, $328,100 plus $13,901 in benefits ($320,645, plus $13,187 in benefits in 2020)
- Associate medical officer of health Dr. Richard Gould, $307,413 plus $13,901 in benefits ($288,172)
- York Regional Police Chief James MacSween, $298,522 plus $20,667 in benefits ($277,589 plus $14,276 in benefits in 2020)
Southlake Regional Health Centre has seen the number of employees on the Sunshine List reduced last year, with 503 names on the list. The hospital had grappled with an operating deficit in 2020.
Southlake's top five earners were:
- CEO Andrea Krystal, $520,229 plus $10,649 in benefits ($468,729, plus $10,948 in benefits in 2020).
- Vice-president Annette Jones, $373,234 ($274,520 in 2020)
- Pathologist Shaheda Handy, $352,464 ($358,769 in 2020).
- Pathologist Margaret Misztal, $336,107 ($349,314 in 2020).
