'Massive' sinkhole cavity closes 2nd lane on Highway 400

Avoid Highway 400 north of Newmarket, both left lanes going southbound and northbound between Line 5 and Highway 88 are closed for repairs to the deep hole, OPP say

After a southbound Highway 400 lane near Bradford was closed early Monday evening due to a deep sinkhole, the Ontario Provincial Police said Tuesday afternoon that the closure will be expanded to include the left lane going northbound.

The lanes are between Line 5 and Highway 88, and along the median strip there’s a sinkhole that appears to be small in size from the surface.

“It doesn’t look like much from the surface, but once you get down and take a look inside… the hole goes down at least 11 feet, it looks  deeper than that to me,” said Sgt. Kerry Schmidt in a video posted to social media. “It’s a massive cavity here right now.”

Schmidt said they’re wondering how far the sinkhole will expand and that the hole is compromising the left lanes heading both north and southbound on Highway 400.

“Avoid the area, we have heavy heavy traffic delays heading southbound,” said Schmidt. “That will now include northbound delays by this afternoon.”

The delays could potentially extend for the next few days, said Schmidt, until the repairs can be made.
