The Holland Marsh Market has created their own winter vegetable box program, containing fresh produce from all over Ontario.
The Ontario Eats Winter Harvest Share box will include a selection of Holland Marsh root vegetables, like carrots, onions, beets and potatoes as well as other fresh items like sweet potatoes, spinach, lettuce, tomatoes peppers and radishes. Also included in the boxes will be a mix of fresh fruit like apples, pears and strawberries.
This is the market's second box delivery program. After having success with their summer boxes, they decided to create a winter program.
Owner of the Holland Marsh Market, Liz Gorzo says the idea for a winter box came after realizing how many people have a hard time finding local produce in the colder months.
"We have so many great root crops just being harvested by our marsh farmers and they are rarely found in our local stores," she explained.
"Greenhouse growers in Norfolk, Essex and other Ontario growing regions grow so many different crops inside now making these local crops available all year round."
She also says it is a great way to keep business going in the slower season.
"As a farmer and owner of a seasonal market, it allows me to employ local people during the winter months."
In addition to the vegetable boxes, they will also be offering a "Local Eats Holiday Box" that will feature a collection of Ontario artisan items like honey, maple syrup, preserves, cheese and sweet treats.
