Literacy Council York-Simcoe has received $11,175 from 100 Women Who Care Central York Region to support customized training programs for local adults.
"They are thrilled that our giving circle came together to assist them in providing necessary services during this pandemic," said Laurie Brakeboer, founder of the Central York chapter of women in Newmarket, Aurora and East Gwillimbury who are continuing to meet online every few months to support local charities.
While the non-profit agency's centre in Newmarket remains closed due to COVID-19 restrictions, training — remote lessons, online curriculum, and online computer training — continues to be offered free of charge to students able to work independently throughout the pandemic.
Ongoing support is also offered through telephone and email conferences.
Literacy Council York-Simcoe's Skills Upgrading Centre helps York Region and Bradford West Gwillimbury adults improve their employment prospects, prepare for a higher education, and acquire skills needed for a successful future.
The agency, which receives support from the Ministry of Labour, Training, and Skills Development, the Regional Municipality of York, United Way Greater Toronto, and local charitable gaming, also relies donations from corporations, foundations and individuals to provide its free training. Volunteers are welcome.
