The Town of Newmarket is reminding you that fireworks are forbidden over the Civic Holiday weekend.

Central York Fire Services notes fireworks are only allowed during the Canada Day and Victoria Day holidays within Newmarket and Aurora. Bylaw officers will be watching for infractions this long weekend, and fines for improper use in Newmarket start at $600.

“Newmarket’s bylaw department will be monitoring for unlawful use of fireworks this weekend and use an educational approach,” communications specialist Amanda Lee said. “Residents who would like to report bylaw infractions such as the use of fireworks can do so by calling the town’s after-hours line at 905-895-5193 and press three."

Improper fireworks use has garnered controversy over the last two holiday weekends, with residents complaining about them going off outside the allowed three-day periods. Unexpected fireworks can be harmful to people with PTSD and other conditions. They can also be an issue for pets and local wildlife.

A recent NewmarketToday poll found most respondents wanted either more enforcement and fines for improper fireworks use or an outright ban.

Central York Fire Services is also reminding you to exercise care with fire safety when cooking or barbecuing and having fires over the weekend. You can find tips here.

“Remember, whenever there is a flame, always have a water source on hand and ready for action,” the fire department advises.
