At 60, Barbie is looking good.
Toys R Us Canada, including the Newmarket location at Upper Canada Mall, is marking the iconic doll's 60th anniversary with special events this Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., including decorating a cookie treat, playing with the newest Barbie dolls and playsets, and getting a Barbie 60th collector poster.
Toys R Us Canada will also host seven in-store special guest appearances with prominent Canadian role models who exemplify the Barbie You Can Be Anything mantra — no dream is too big, no idea is too wild and no possibility is out of reach.
“As a brand that inspires the limitless potential in girls, Barbie is thrilled to be celebrating its 60th anniversary with Toys R Us Canada and recognizing role models across the country who empower and remind girls that You Can Be Anything,” Krista Berger, global senior director of marketing for Barbie, said in a news release.
“The brand has been inspiring girls since 1959 by allowing them to play out different roles and careers with iconic Barbie dolls.”
From an Olympian ice dancer to chefs and robotic engineers, the role models represent a diverse assortment of successful women and are being featured both in-store and across Barbie’s and Toys R Us Canada’s social media channels over a 60-week period.
In York Region, Faith Dickinson, founder of Cuddles for Cancer, will be at the Thornhill location from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 9 (300 Steeles Ave. West). She founded the charity when she was in Grade 4, making fleece blankets for cancer patients to snuggle as they go through treatments. In the past six years, she has made 4,000 blankets for patients in more than 25 countries.
