Newmarket shelter Inn From the Cold is taking a swing at a new fundraiser with its first ever golf tournament.

The event will take place on Thursday, Aug. 12 at Cardinal Golf Club on Davis Drive.

“It’s our first kick at the can, we’ve never done this before,” Ann Watson, executive director at Inn From the Cold, said.

She added that hitting the green was an easy choice for the shelter’s first major summer fundraiser as “people are loving to golf right now.”

The proceeds will support the shelter’s programs at a time when they need an extra boost.

“Summer tends to be a time when donations are a little bit lower, so it’s a good fit,” Watson said.

She said that Inn From the Cold is currently open seven days a week, hands out food four days a week, has drop-in programs four days a week, is running a program at Ray Twinney five days a week and is also running a satellite program, as well as a number of other initiatives.

“The tournament will really allow us to run some first-rate programs,” Watson said.

They are hoping for 140 players and are about a third of the way there so far. While Watson said some people may just want to come and sign up on the day of the event, she hopes more individuals and foursomes will sign up online ahead of time.

Fees are $150 for an individual, or $600 for a foursome and includes lunch, a cart, and course fees.

“People can get out and sort of enjoy the summer and enjoy the company of good friends and co-workers and at the same time support Inn From the Cold, so we’re hoping people see it as that win-win,” Watson said.

The lead sponsors of the tournament are Canadian Tire Newmarket and Party City Newmarket. with Play It Again Sports as a passport sponsor.

There are still opportunities available for businesses to sponsor a hole at the event and Watson said they are also looking for a food and beverage sponsor.
