York Region is reminding residents to be aware of disease spread as it marks National Infection Control Week Oct. 16 to 20.

York Region Public Health is encouraging everyone to protect themselves and their loved ones as the Ontario respiratory illness season hits, with cases of COVID-19, influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) increasing.

Public health advises residents to get up-to-date information about COVID-19 eligibility, with those in vulnerable groups, including seniors and those with underlying health conditions now able to get updated flu and COVID-19 shots.

“Most people who become sick will recover without complications. However, some groups, including young children, the elderly and people with certain medical conditions are at greater risk of developing severe health problems, such as pneumonia, that may require hospitalization,” York Region said in a news release.

The theme of this year’s National Infection Control Week is “Unmasking the Future,” recognizing lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic that can be used moving forward.

Public health also reminded residents to take measures like staying home when sick, cleaning their hands often with soap, disinfecting items and surfaces they touch frequently, such as phones, avoiding close contact with people who are sick and wearing a mask in crowded indoor spaces like public transit or large gatherings.
