The Rotary Club of Newmarket will welcome more than 260 Rotarians from across the province for an annual foundation walk on the Tom Taylor Trail Sunday.

Rotarians from District 7070 and their family and friends will gather for breakfast and then participate in a brisk five-kilometre walk starting at 10 a.m. They aim to raise $100,000 for the foundation to support its projects.

“We’re really excited to have it back here in Newmarket, as it’s been a while,” said Laura Bradford, chair of the foundation walk. “We often don’t get to showcase our little town.”

A one-kilometre option around Fairy Lake is available for people who prefer a shorter walk, to ensure that everyone can participate and feel included in this community event, she said.

The foundation was formed more than 100 years ago and awards grants to Rotary Clubs for large projects on an international and local level. Funds are also disbursed for emergency relief when disaster strikes an area. To date, the foundation has spent more than $4 billion.

“When you can make a difference in the community, it’s a great way to spend your time,” said Bradford.

A lunch will be provided after the walk at Newmarket’s Riverwalk Commons.

The district consists of members of about 52 clubs from Prince Edward County, Etobicoke, Alliston, and other municipalities. The foundation walk moves to a different municipality each year. Bradford said the last foundation walk in Newmarket was in 2014. She looks forward to spending time with Rotarians and showing them the changes in town since then.

“We have had so much change in Newmarket,” said Bradford. “The downtown is completely different from what they would have seen 10 years ago.”
