Highway 400 has re-opened after completion of repairs to a sinkhole that led to closures of both the southbound and northbound left lanes near Bradford.
Initially, the southbound left lane was closed Monday evening due to a large sinkhole that was estimated to be more than 11-feet deep. Tuesday afternoon, the Ontario Provincial Police expanded the closure to include the left lane heading northbound.
The sinkhole was along the median strip, leading to the lanes on both sides being closed between Line 5 and Highway 88.
“It doesn’t look like much from the surface, but once you get down and take a look inside… the hole goes down at least 11 feet, it looks deeper than that to me,” said Sgt. Kerry Schmidt in a video posted to social media on Tuesday. “It’s a massive cavity here right now.”
The lane closures led to heavy traffic delays both north and southbound with repairs beginning on Wednesday.
“The hole itself is relatively small, but underneath that hole there’s a significant cavity that has compromised both left lanes,” said Schmidt in a video posted to social media during the repairs. “They’re estimating between 20 and 30 yards of concrete are going to have to go in there to fill this hole.”
