During this week's extreme cold weather, those experiencing homelessness are reminded that warm places are available.
Temperatures in the region are dipping below -10C this week, with York Region issuing a cold weather alert continuing to Jan. 21. Those in need of shelter can contact the emergency housing central intake line at 1-877-464-9675, ext. 76140.
“Extreme cold weather can mean life-threatening conditions for individuals experiencing homelessness,” housing charity Blue Door said on social media.
The cold weather alert has municipalities reminding the public about places to get warm shelter during the day.
The Town of Newmarket has warming centres available at the Magna Centre at 800 Mulock Dr. and Ray Twinney Recreation Complex at 100 Eagle St. West during opening hours, 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Aurora has warming centres open at the Stronach Aurora Recreation Complex at 1400 Wellington St. East and the Aurora Family Leisure Complex at 135 Industrial Pkwy. North and the Aurora Community Centre at 1 Community Centre Ln., all from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Drop-in programs are also available for those experiencing homelessness. In Newmarket, that includes Inn From the Cold at 17837 Yonge St., 647-512-8754, Belinda’s Place at 16580 Yonge. St., 289-366-4673, and Cornerstone to Recovery at 570 Steven Crt., unit B, 905-762-1551. In Aurora, the Canadian Mental Health Association also has drop-in available at 15150 Yonge St., 905-841-3977, ext. 4248).
