Environment Canada has issued a snow squall watch for Newmarket developing this afternoon, and persisting into the evening and possibly Wednesday morning.

Travel may be hazardous due to sudden changes in the weather.

Under snow squall bands, visibility will be significantly reduced due to the heavy snow, and snow will quickly accumulate. Areas under the most intense portions of these bands could receive snowfall of up to 5 centimetres today and up to 15 cm tonight.

The watch extends to northern York Region, Georgina, and northern Durham Region, Uxbridge and Beaverton.

Intense lake effect snow bands are expected to develop off Lake Huron and Georgian Bay this afternoon and to intensify this evening and continue overnight.

Environment Canada issues snow squall watches when conditions are favourable for the formation of bands of snow that could produce intense accumulating snow or near zero visibility.
