Georgina girl is first child to die with COVID-19 in York Region

The child, aged under 10, passed away Feb. 27, York Region Public Health reports

A Georgina girl under the age of 10 is being reported as the first child death due to COVID-19 in York Region.

The child passed away Sunday, Feb. 27, according to York Region spokesperson Patrick Casey.

No further details will be provided, "in keeping with privacy considerations," he said.

Public Health Ontario data shows York Region has had no child COVID-19 deaths until now. There have only been seven COVID-19 deaths confirmed across the province for children aged 11 or younger as of March 1, including two children under the age of 10 earlier this year.

"We offer condolences to the family and loved ones of our residents," said Casey.

There have been 12 deaths in the 20 to 39 age group as of March 1 in the region, including a 25-year-old Newmarket man and 23-year-old Vaughan man. No York Region residents in their teens have died with COVID-19, according to public health data.

In total, 921 York Region residents have died with COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic.
