The Newmarket chapter of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association is organizing a new annual community run that will launch this fall to support local charities.
The national Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association has been organizing charity runs for almost two decades and there are 18 planned this year all across Canada. However the Newmarket chapter of the association has never held one.
“As a local Newmarket chapter, we are also organizing Run for Newmarket this fall,” said Salman Ahmad, one of the organizers. “The idea behind it is to raise funds for local charities and non-profit organizations.”
The first Run for Newmarket will support the Newmarket Food Pantry and Blue Door.
Ahmad said the annual event will support other charities in the future.
“The idea is to support local charities every year, do something for the community, engage everyone in the community and all people from all walks of life,” he said.
Ahmad said giving back is a big part of the Muslim faith and that is the driving factor behind everything they do.
The Newmarket Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association has been involved in a number of community initiatives over the past several years, including blood donor drives, food drives, and other fundraising events.
The date for the run has not yet been confirmed but Ahmad said they are aiming for September. Registration is not yet open but they have created social media pages for potential participants to follow for updates.
