Newmarket residents will be safer in their homes, thanks to a donation of nearly $12,000 from Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada for carbon monoxide detector/smoke alarm units.
Members of Newmarket council and Central York Fire Services welcomed the cheque for $11,967, which will purchase 324 of the alarms for citizens in need, at the annual open at the fire station on Gorham Street Sept. 28.
Firehouse Subs area representative Alex Gerzon and Firehouse Subs franchisee Michael Lavee presented the grant raised by restaurant guests who purchased recycled Firehouse Subs pickle buckets for a $3 donation to the foundation. As well, donation canisters on register counters explain the non-profit’s mission and collect spare change, while the Round Up Program allows guests to “round up” their bill to the nearest dollar.
In 2005, the Firehouse Subs founders established Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation in the U.S. with the mission of providing funding, lifesaving equipment, and educational opportunities to first responders and public safety organizations. Ten years later, with the opening of the first Canadian Firehouse Subs restaurant in 2015, the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada was born.
The registered charity has granted more than $641,000 to hometown heroes in Canada.
