For over 20 years, The Shop (part of Youth Unlimited) has helped at-risk youth in Newmarket and surrounding areas through a unique program aimed at steering their futures onto a productive path.

Under the leadership of Mark Dean, Director of The Shop, the organization provides critical support to young people facing significant life barriers such as legal troubles, school expulsions, anxiety and substance abuse.

“We serve youth who have few options left,” Dean said. “They’re looking for resources, jobs, or a way to complete community service hours. Many are dealing with significant issues and our one-on-one mentorship approach helps them identify and work toward their goals.”

The program enrolls 35 to 45 young people each year, focusing on mentorship and gaining experience in basic automotive repair.

The goals for youth vary and aren't just measured by employment.

"Success is often defined by the youth themselves. For some, it’s about landing a job or securing a position at an auto dealership. While for others, even small victories, like learning to navigate public transportation, are important milestones," shared Dean.

One unique aspect of The Shop is its 2,000-square-foot workshop, where donated cars are cleaned, inspected and detailed.

As the youth work on these vehicles, they engage in conversations with staff, opening the door to deeper discussions about their struggles.

The program also offers private counselling rooms with registered professionals to provide help on legal, personal and financial issues, as well as access to community resources like housing or food banks.

The Shop is privately funded, relying on donations and vehicle sales through its vehicle donation program.

Donors receive tax receipts for their vehicles, which are picked up within 24 hours, with all proceeds supporting the program.

The organization is fully registered, insured and licensed, with a team that includes mechanics, psychotherapists and certified appraisers.

Though The Shop is faith-based, Dean emphasizes that people of all faiths (or none) are equally welcome.

The program serves youth from across Toronto, Brampton, Scarborough and Barrie, with a sister location in Cambridge.
