York Region is issuing a cold weather alert for those experiencing homelessness as temperatures dip over the next two days.
After a period of warmer weather, Newmarket, Aurora and York Region are expected to see below-freezing temperatures and face a snow squall warning from Environment and Climate Change Canada. With that, the region has issued the alert for Jan. 2 and 3.
If you or someone you know needs shelter, York Region asks you to contact the emergency housing central intake line at 1-877-464-9675, ext. 76140.
Newmarket has warming centres available at the Magna Centre at 800 Mulock Dr. and Ray Twinney Recreation Complex at 100 Eagle St. W. during opening hours, 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Aurora has warming centres open at the Stronach Aurora Recreation Complex at 1400 Wellington St. E, the Aurora Family Leisure Complex at 135 Industrial Pkwy. N. and the Aurora Community Centre at 1 Community Centre Ln., all from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
The Ray Twinney Recreation Complex at 100 Eagle St. W is open Monday through Sunday from 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., while the Magna Centre at 800 Mulock Dr. is also open from 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.
