The demand for donations for the Newmarket Food Pantry is high and local No Frills grocery stores and their customers are trying to address the need through their annual holiday food drive.

The Feed More Families Holiday Food Drive continues to Dec. 24. Newmarket residents can make a food or monetary donation in-store to help local families who rely on the food pantry. All donations will stay within the community and go directly to the Newmarket Food Pantry.

Newmarket Food Pantry executive director Adrian Bain said the demand for their services has never been greater.

“The No Frills food drive is crucial to our food bank's operations and mission. It encompasses the involvement and contributions within the community that help the food bank meet its goals of alleviating hunger and supporting those in need, while also fostering a culture of care, awareness, and collective action,” Bain said. “We are deeply thankful.”

Newmarket’s No Frills have committed to helping the Newmarket Food Pantry for several years. John van Teunenbroek, owner of the Davis Drive location, received a Portraits of Giving award this year for his efforts to support the pantry.

Bain said the local food bank is continuing to see record usage, up 120 per cent compared to 2020. Bain said they expect to see usage like that continue into 2025.

“Donating to a food bank right now is important as it allows us to continue our mission in the fight against hunger, as we support vulnerable populations and getting people back on the path to self-sufficiency,” Bain said. “Donating is also important for strengthening communities, reducing food waste, making a tangible impact, and creating awareness, inspiring others to get involved.”

In-demand items include pasta sauce, canned fruits and vegetables, canned meat, coffee, baby needs like baby formula, fruit cups, side dishes and more.

“We are fortunate that we have an incredible community that always responds to the need in our community,” Bain said. “We know our donors will always step up to ensure those who need a little bit of extra help right now will get the support they need. It’s incredibly rewarding for staff and volunteers to know that each day our mission of feeding people is fulfilled.”
