Construction begins on Newmarket's massive multi-use path

Some sidewalk closures for construction on Mulock Drive, first phase expected to be complete by the fall

Construction has officially begun on a new multi-million-dollar multi-use path on Mulock Drive that will stretch from Bathurst Street to Harry Walker Parkway.

The Mulock path, which had a $3.7-million preliminary cost estimate, will get underway this week. Work on the first phase of the three-meter wide trail meant to better accommodate pedestrians and cyclists will stretch from Bathurst to Yonge Street, with an expected completion of fall 2023.

“This east-west path will be designed to allow for a wide range of recreational uses such as cycling, walking, jogging and wheelchair access. The goal for the Mulock Drive MUP is to allow the community to connect to key destinations in town, such as the future Mulock GO Station, existing trails, schools and the future Mulock Property,” the municipality said on its website.

The first phase of work will see asphalt added in place of the existing concrete along Mulock. During construction, a lane shift will occur to accommodate the work and “ensure minimal disruption to traffic.”

The first phase of construction will also see the closure of the sidewalk on the north side of Mulock from Yonge to Doubletree Lane.

“We apologize for any inconvenience this project may cause and thank you for your patience while we complete this exciting MUP project that will improve our active transportation network and provide a safe direct route to the future Mulock Park,” the town said.

Construction timelines for the second phase of the project, going from Yonge to Harry Walker Parkway, remains to be determined.
