NEWS RELEASE
TORONTO LIGHT FESTIVAL
*************************
The Distillery District’s favourite takeover is back. From Jan. 18 to March 3, the Toronto Light Festival returns, transforming the pedestrian district into one of the largest open-air sculpture galleries in North America.
Lighting up both the night and day, the festival will run daily and is free to the public.
“Our goal is to make people smile,” says Mathew Rosenblatt, executive director of the festival. “During our coldest months of the year, at a time when people might feel isolated, we want to bring them together to experience something really special and add more warmth and light to their lives.”
More than 35 light art installations from local and international artists
Works include rainbows, polar bears, deoxyribonucleic acid, and the meaning of life, created by artists from Canada, the United States, Europe, and the Middle East.
The names and details of the light art installations will be revealed on opening day, Jan. 18.
“We ask that everyone who attends the festival leave their phones at home. We don’t want people taking photos,” says Rosenblatt. “Just kidding! This festival was made for Instagram.”
New this year
The Distillery District is enhancing its wintertime experience by offering arts, culture and entertainment-centric activations during the day on weekends.
Offerings will include:
- Art produced by some of Toronto’s leading mural artists
- A heater forest paired with mulled wine, hot toddies and (potentially spiked) hot chocolate
- Jazz and classical music performances in public spaces and in some of the retail boutique
- Complimentary ice wine samplings on Saturdays
- Complimentary champagne tastings on Sundays
- There will even be an outdoor weekend brunch served on the spectacular El Catrin Patio
