'Celebrate girls': BRAVE boosts self-esteem, combats human trafficking

June 8 event organized by Northridge Community Church in Aurora includes free self-defence lessons, live music, art therapy

An Aurora church has organized an event for girls aged 12 to 16 to help boost their confidence, while warning them of the risks of human trafficking.

Northridge Community Church of The Salvation Army has been running the BRAVE event for several years to raise awareness of the risks of human trafficking that are particularly high for young girls, even more so for those in vulnerable situations like being in foster care.

While the June 8 event tackles a serious topic, that's not the main focus, said Angela Covert, community relations representative at Northridge.

“The day itself is set out to be a fun day, that will encourage them to really dream big for what their future might look like. It’s an opportunity to boost confidence and their self-esteem.”

The event, which originated in the U.S., features activities including self-defence classes run by K.O. Club, an Aurora-based martial arts fitness gym.

There will also be live music performed by SEVEN, a girl band comprised of three best friends from Georgina.

There will also be art therapy classes run by Newmarket-based art therapist Kimberley Mullin.

“We don’t want to make it anything fearful or a downer, it really is an uplifting event,” added Covert. “It really is to celebrate the girls, who they are and provide them the tools for confidence and self-esteem.”

About 55 girls are already registered, with some having attended in previous years, according to Covert.

“As a parent, you try and instill certain skills and boost their confidence in themselves,” she said. “But when they’re hearing it from others and seeing it in other girls, I think, as a parent, I would love to see my kids take part in an opportunity like that.”

Registration is available online.

The event runs from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 8 at Northridge Community Church, 15338 Leslie St. in Aurora.
