The Canadian-Muslim Vote, a non-profit, non-partisan organization increasing democratic engagement within the Muslim community, will be holding the Visit My Mosque Day open house at Newmarket Islamic Centre, 700 Mulock Dr., as part of Canada-wide events on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2018, from noon to 4 p.m. Participants have been signing up at participating mosques online at visitmymosque.ca.

Mayor-elect John Taylor has confirmed he will be attending. Mayor Tony Van Bynen was invited but is unable to attend.

A number of mosques across Canada will welcome the public this weekend.

Ali Manek, Executive Director of The Canadian-Muslim Vote, said, “Participating in Visit My Mosque Day is a great way to meet your neighbours and make new friends within the local community. It is an opportunity for both the Muslim community and neighbours of the mosque to engage and interact with the intention of overcoming racism, Islamophobia, and discrimination against any community. Despite the large wave of hateful and sometimes violent Islamophobic messages being levelled against our organization, as well as the mosques, on social media, we are excited to come together in solidarity and celebrate diversity with our friends and politicians with the goal of increasing democratic engagement.”

The Canadian-Muslim Vote was founded in 2015 with the mandate to mobilize Muslim voters, in a non-partisan fashion, at all levels of government. It is estimated in the Ontario Provincial Election Get Out The Vote Campaign, the Canadian-Muslim Vote had nearly 2 million touchpoints with the Muslim community. They were also active in the Quebec Provincial Elections and the Ontario Municipal Elections in October 2018. This is the second annual Visit My Mosque Day in Canada, modelling similar events taking place across the world, including in the U.K., France, Norway, and Australia.
