Blue Door is preparing to transform one of its Newmarket housing facilities and is inviting the public to learn more.
The housing charity is holding a community drop-in information event tonight, Oct. 3, on its transformation of Kevin’s Place shelter at 835 Gorham St. The charity is preparing to demolish the 12-unit home to make way for 14 stacked townhouse units on the same property.
“Kevin’s Place is not operating at its full potential. The housing is occupying only about 30 per cent of the total property it sits on,” Blue Door said on social media. “These townhouses will provide affordable and accessible housing to vulnerable individuals and families that are experiencing homelessness in our community.”
Blue Door received council approvals for the concept in 2023 and a ministerial zoning order it needed from the province this past summer. Kevin’s Place has operated for more than 20 years, providing 12 emergency and transitional housing spaces for male youth. The new proposal will have 14 units similarly providing transitional and emergency housing for families. The project will also add parking, to a total of 14 spaces for visitors, residents and staff.
Development on the project is due to start later this year. Blue Door and EllisDon Corporation will be hosting the drop-in session at the Construct facility at 212 Earl Stewart Dr. in Aurora from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
