Aurora, Markham restaurants closed, Newmarket eatery charged for food safety violations

Restaurants in Aurora and Markham were temporarily closed, and a restaurant in Newmarket was charged with food safety violations by York Region Public Health inspectors last week.

Captain George Fish and Chips at 14 Wellington St. E. in Aurora was ordered to close on July 2 for operating in a manner permitting a health hazard and failing to provide adequate protection against the entrance of insects, vermin or rodents, according to the public health inspection report.

A report of non-compliance items includes failure to maintain dishwasher wash water between 60 C and 71 C, failure to provide adequate protection against the harbouring of pests, failure to maintain records of pest control measures taken, failure to ensure ceilings are kept clean and in good repair and failure to ensure walls are kept clean and in good repair.

Food handler education was conducted on-site, a proof of public health sign was posted and the restaurant was ordered to close. Following a re-inspection on July 3, health inspectors found satisfactory compliance. A proof of public health sign was posted and the restaurant was reopened.

New Olde Village Bistro at 4430 Hwy. 7 E. in Markham was ordered to close on July 4 for failing to provide adequate protection against the entrance of insects, vermin or rodents.

The report notes non-compliance items including failure to provide adequate protection against the harbouring of pests, failure to maintain records of pest control measures taken, failure to ensure completion of food handling training by food handler or supervisor, and failure to maintain the food premises free from every condition that may be a health hazard, adversely affect the sanitary operation of the premises or adversely affect the wholesomeness of the food.

Food handler education was conducted on-site, a proof of public health sign was posted and the restaurant was ordered to close. Following a re-inspection on July 7, health inspectors found satisfactory compliance. A proof of public health sign was posted and the restaurant was reopened.

Plates and Bowl Limited at 16640 Yonge St. unit 9 in Newmarket was charged on July 2 for sanitizing utensils in a chlorine solution of less than 100 p.p.m. of available chlorine and storing potentially hazardous foods at an internal temperature between 4 C and 60 C.

The report notes non-compliance items including failure to provide handwashing stations with adequate supplies, failure to sanitize utensils in a chlorine solution of 100 ppm of available chlorine or more, and failure to ensure the presence of a certified food handler or supervisor during all hours of operation.

Food handler education was conducted on-site, an acceptable temporary measure was put in place and a ticket was served. Following a re-inspection on July 4, food handler education was conducted on site.
