3 York Region eateries ordered to close for public health infractions

Three food establishments in York Region were ordered to close and five more were charged for public health violations by York Region inspectors last week.

A & A Hot Dog Cart in Georgina, 437 Lake Dr. E., was ordered to close Nov. 2 as it was being operated in a manner permitting a health hazard and an there was an inadequate supply of potable water available, according to the report for inspections made Oct. 30 to Nov. 5 by York Region Community and Health Services, health protection division.

Health inspectors also noted that the establishment failed to provide hand washing stations with adequate supplies, failed to maintain hand washing stations, and failed to provide hot and cold water under pressure. 

Food handler education was carried out on site by inspectors and after a re-inspection the street food vendor was re-opened.

The cart had previously been ordered to close on Oct. 23 for operating in a manner permitting a health hazard.

Mr. Greek Express in Concord, 6 - 3255 Rutherford Rd., was ordered to close Oct. 31 for food premises being operated in a manner permitting a health hazard and the owner/operator failing to provide adequate protection against the entrance of insects, vermin or rodents.

The restaurant was also flagged for failing to ensure floors are kept clean/in good repair and failing to ensure equipment surfaces were cleaned as necessary. Food handler education was carried out and the establishment was reopened upon re-inspection.

Delhicacies in Concord, 2-3 - 3255 Rutherford Rd., was ordered to close Oct. 31 for food premises being operated in a manner permitting a health hazard and the owner/operator failing to provide adequate protection against the entrance of insects, vermin or rodents.

The restaurant was also not in compliance due to failing to provide hand washing stations with adequate supplies and failing to ensure floors are kept clean/in good repair. After food handler education was carried out and a re-inspection performed, the restaurant was reopened.

Made in Mexico in Newmarket, 179 Main St. S., was charged for operating a food premise with mechanical equipment not maintained to maintain wash water between 60°C and 71°C on Nov. 1. 

During a re-inspection the next day, temporary measures were put in place and food handler education was carried out.

Wild Wing in Markham, Unit B1 - 9408 Markham Rd., was charged with food premise not being maintained with clean floors in food-handling room and food premise not being maintained with clean walls in food-handling room Oct. 30.

Health inspectors also noted the restaurant failed to sanitize utensils using a chemical solution at the minimum concentration and failed to maintain its ventilation system. Food handler education was carried out and a re-inspection will be conducted.

Wild Wing in Georgina, 11 - 20865 Dalton Rd., was charged with operating food premise with mechanical equipment not maintained to provide sufficient chemical solution rinse on Nov. 2.

It was also noted the establishment failed to provide hand washing stations that are conveniently accessible by food handlers, failed to sanitize utensils using a chemical solution at the minimum concentration, failed to maintain ventilation system, failed to ensure room is kept free from materials/equipment not regularly used, and failed to ensure floors are kept clean/in good repair.

Food handler education was carried out and the restaurant was charged during a re-inspection.

Offsides Sports Bar & Grill in Georgina, 1-2 - 200 Simcoe Ave., was charged with failure to ensure presence of food handler or supervisor during all hours of operation on Nov. 3.

Health inspectors noted that the restaurant also failed to store and maintain potentially hazardous food at an internal temperature 4°C (40°F) and lower, failed to protect food from contamination or adulteration, and failed to maintain records of pest control measures taken.

Food handler education was carried out and temporary measures were put in place. A re-inspection will be conducted at a later date.

Chartwell Oak Ridges Retirement Residence in Richmond Hill,  12925 Yonge St., was charged with failing to provide a thermometer in hot-holding equipment on Oct. 31.

The retirement home was also flagged for failing  to store and maintain potentially hazardous food at an internal temperature 4°C (40°F) and lower, failing to store and maintain potentially hazardous food at an internal temperature at 60°C (140°F) and higher, and failing to provide adequate protection against the harbouring of pests.

Food handler education was carried out and temporary measures were put in place with a re-inspection to be conducted at a later date.
