Re: 'This is the one thing they can do': Newmarket seniors call for climate action, Sept. 15, 2024.
Seniors will be gathering across Canada on Oct 1. to rally for urgent action on climate change. In my ninth decade now, I have seen the old ways slowly giving way to modern technologies. We have gone from coal heating to solar panels, as our homes and businesses can now be powered by clean energy.
A brighter future is just around the corner if we stop burning fossil fuels that fill the atmosphere with carbon emissions leading to more frequent and stronger storms, wildfires, and flooding. We know what needs to be done and we know how to do it.
We call upon the Canadian government to stop subsidizing the fossil fuels industry, and put money where it is needed, in a transition to clean energy.
In Ontario, the government is intent on putting more money into pollution spewing and unnecessary new highways, while under-funding health care and education. We need health care, not more highways. We need public transportation, not fantasy tunnels. We need serious action on climate change.
At noon on Tuesday, Oct. 1, seniors will rally at the southeast corner of Mulock and Yonge streets in Newmarket to urge support for action on climate change and a clean energy future for our children.
