On Sept. 5, I was on Main Street to catch the campaign appearance of Justin Trudeau.
In what appears to be a regular feature, Justin Trudeau was heckled by people who are opposed to masking and vaccination to prevent the transmission of COVID-19. But there was much more to the "protest."
I was astounded to see an alarming number of members of the pro-virus faction harassing and intimidating people of colour. A woman with a megaphone advanced on two Asian women beside me, targeting and yelling at them until they started to retreat in fear. A "protester" screamed at a Muslim woman to take off her hijab. "Go back to where you came from!" screeched another. A Black teenage girl being bullied stood crying and shaking hysterically behind me while trying to hold up a pro-Liberal sign.
I am an independent voter who was there to hear from Trudeau, and I was anticipating a free and robust exchange of ideas. What I did not expect to encounter, however, was such a shocking barrage of flagrant white supremacy in my hometown. I have lived in Newmarket for 52 years. I did not recognize a single one of these xenophobes. This is a bigoted campaign mob going from town to town and the media should expose them.
