York Region's COVID-19 cases up by 7 to 44, Ontario jumps by 47 to 424 (Update)

The region has confirmed additional cases in Richmond Hill, Markham and Vaughan

UPDATE, March 22, 5:30 p.m.: The province is reporting an additional case of COVID-19, a Markham woman in her 70s who died today after returning from international travel yesterday. The total number of cases is now 425, with five individuals deceased due to COVID-19-related illness.

York Region public health is reporting a total of 44 confirmed COVID-19 cases, with seven additional cases in Vaughan, Richmond Hill and Markham, while Ontario is confirming a total of 424, with 47 cases added this morning, March 22.

The region's new cases in Vaughan are a female in her 50s (under investigation), a man in his 30s (travel) in self-isolation, and a man in his 20s (under investigation). In Richmond Hill, a man in his 40s is in self-isolation with a travel-related case. The additional cases in Markham, a man in his 50s, a woman in her 30 and a man in his 70s, are all under investigation.

A Bradford West Gwillimbury woman is in serious condition with a community-acquired COVID-19 case at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket,  Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit confirmed yesterday.

The woman, who is aged in her 30s and presented at Southlake March 17, has no travel history and has not been in contact with a previously confirmed case.

York Region confirmed yesterday that a woman in her 70s at Markhaven Home For Seniors in Markham has tested positive for COVID-19.

Of the 44 cases in York Region, 15 are in Markham, 14 in Vaughan, eight in Richmond Hill, two in Newmarket, two in East Gwillimbury, two in Aurora and one in Stouffville.

Details regarding gender, age, location, cause of transmission and status are provided for only seven of the 47 additional confirmed cases on the province's dedicated website.

Yesterday Ontario’s death toll rose to three with a second Barrie death at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre.

The province has been lagging behind in its reporting, according to a Region of York spokesperson Patrick Casey, who confirmed the regional reporting is accurate.

As for the additional confirmed cases with details reported in Ontario today, they are travel related from the Caribbean and close contact in Toronto, Peel, Hamilton, Waterloo, Eastern Ontario, and Ottawa. 

To date in Ontario, 26,419 individuals have been tested for coronavirus, with the number waiting for results leaping to 8,361, and 17,634 have tested negative. Eight of the cases have been resolved and three patients are deceased.

In Canada, there are more than 1,200 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Chief Public Health Officer of Canada Dr. Theresa Tam said the daily confirmed cases count reflects testing done days ago, and those people would have spent several days with the virus before developing symptoms.
