Newmarket's 2nd COVID-19 death among York Region's 41 fatalities (UPDATE)

York Region reported another six deaths today, as well as 59 new cases, including six more in Newmarket

COVID-19 deaths and new cases continue to soar in recent days in York Region, now totalling 41 deaths and 824 cases, including Newmarket's second fatality in as many days.

A 90-year-old Newmarket man is among six additional COVID-19 related deaths being reported by York Region public health. He died Monday, April 13 at Southlake Regional Health Centre, six days after testing postive. He first experienced symptoms March 15, and the cause of transmission is unknown.

A 59-year-old woman from King Township also died Monday, April 13 at Southlake Regional Health Centre. The travel-acquired symptoms first appeared March 22, and COVID-19 was confirmed March 30.

An 84-year-old woman passed away Sunday, April 12 at Markhaven Home for Seniors, marking the 11th COVID-19 related death at the Markham facility where an outbreak was declared March 22. COVID-19 was confirmed March 24, the day after the onset of symptoms.

An 89-year-old woman who died Monday, April 13 at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre was Richmond Hill's third COVID-19 related death. The close contact case was confirmed March 29.

An 87-year-old Vaughan woman passed away April 9 at Etobicoke General Hospital. The case was confirmed positive April 11, following her death. The cause of exposure is unknown.

An 84-year-old man died yesterday at  Markham Stouffville Hospital, four days after COVID-19 was confirmed. The cause of transmission is unknown.

York Region public health is reporting 59 more cases, which include six new cases in Newmarket to total 61, today, April 14.

Institutional outbreaks continue to rapidly increase in the last week, now 21 in total, including 12 long-term care facilities and retirement homes. Five "other respiratory" outbreaks are being reported at long-term care and retirement facilities in Richmond Hill, including Del Manor Elgin Mills and Mackenzie Health.

COVID-19 outbreaks are occurring at Southlake Residential Care Village, Eagle Terrace Long-Term Care Home and Mackenzie Place Long-Term Care in Newmarket, at Chartwell Aurora Long-Term Care Residence in Aurora, and at Buckingham Manor in Whitchurch-Stouffville.

New Leaf Farm House and New Leaf Sycamore, both in Queensville, are among seven community care settings with COVID-19 outbreaks. 

The majority of York Region's additional 59 cases today are in Markham — 32, bringing its total to 215 — while Vaughan continues to be the hot zone for the virus, with an additional nine confirmed cases today bringing its total to 372.

Of the 824 cases in York Region:

  • 372 are confirmed in Vaughan (+ 9 today), 13 deaths;
  • 215 in Markham (+ 32 today), 20 deaths;
  • 88 in Richmond Hill (+ 2 today), 2 deaths;
  • 61 in Newmarket (+ 6 today), 2 deaths; 
  • 36 in Aurora (+ 5 today), 1 death;
  • 17 in King, (+4 today), 2 deaths;
  • 12 in Whitchurch-Stouffville (+ 1 today);
  • 11 in East Gwillimbury (+ 1 today);
  • 11 in Georgina (+ 3 today).

The number of hospitalized patients in York Region decreased from 45 to 40 today, with 20 cases critically ill in ICU. 

Resolved cases in the region now tally 101, which has dropped to 12 per cent of the total 824 cases.

As of 4:30 p.m. April 14, Southlake Regional Health Centre is reporting six COVID-19 patients in ICU, and six COVID-19 patients in an inpatient unit. The number of patients under investigation for COVID-19 has jumped from nine to 24 since yesterday. Total deaths remain at five.

The total number of infected health-care workers, which may include physicians, nurses and paramedics, remains at 51 today: seven in Newmarket; one in Aurora, three in Whitchurch-Stouffville; five in Richmond Hill, 13 in Vaughan; and 22 in Markham.
