NEWS RELEASE
TOWN OF NEWMARKET
*************************
The Town of Newmarket is welcoming the community back to the skate park at the Recreation Youth Centre and Sk8 Park on Tuesday, Aug. 18, followed by the Magna Fitness Centre on Wednesday, Aug. 26. Both spaces have been carefully modified and new steps are in place to help ensure members’ safety.

The skate park will be open daily, Tuesday to Saturday from 1 to 7:30 p.m. At this time, the skate park will only be used for open skate sessions. All participants are encouraged to pre-register for their preferred time slot at play.newmarket.ca. There will be limited spots available for walk-ins.

New safety protocols have been put in place to help ensure youth can get out and be active while practising physical distancing and public health guidance. For example, capacity has been limited to 15 riders per time slot and the gymnasium and games areas will not be open to the public. Youth can ride free of charge until further notice.

For more information on what you need to know when returning to the skate park, visit newmarket.ca/youth

Other open facilities in Newmarket
Currently, one ice pad at the Magna Centre is open and only available for rental. Participants enter and exit from a controlled designated area, and are subject to health screening protocols before entering the building. The rest of the building is currently closed to the public. The town is gradually opening one facility at a time to ensure we can responsibly manage safety protocols, costs and community demand.

Magna Fitness Centre reopens soon
On Wednesday, Aug. 26, the Magna Fitness Centre will reopen, offering more residents an opportunity to safely stay active. Members can enjoy a workout on new machines in a modified environment. The Fitness Centre has been relocated to the Magna Centre Honda Rink to ensure physical distancing can be achieved. Members will be required to pre-register for a workout time slot, which will also facilitate contact tracing.

Since the start of the pandemic, the town placed all memberships on hold. Payments will resume in September at a discounted rate for the month of September, in recognition of the limited services offered to adhere to safety requirements. The town also understands residents may wish to extend the hold on their membership at this time. Further details on what to expect and how to extend membership holds has been provided to members through email (read the complete e-blast here).

The town will continue to monitor the changing COVID-19 landscape, seek guidance from the Province of Ontario and reopen more amenities cautiously, based on need. We will also monitor the use of reopened facilities and consider closing if public health and safety is at risk.
