Newmarket marks largest daily jump in cases, now totalling 47

Newmarket marked the largest single-day increase in confirmed COVID-19 cases today, with nine more cases bringing its total to 47.

York Region public health is now reporting 679 cases, including today's 23 additional cases, and two more COVID-19 related deaths, totalling 26 as of today, April 11.

One additional death is being reported in Markham, where the majority of the region's 26 fatalities have occurred; and an eighth death occurred in Vaughan.

An 83-year-old woman is the eighth resident of Markhaven Home for Seniors to die, according to Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti.

Institutional outbreaks have spiked dramatically in York Region, including at three long-term care facilities in Newmarket.

Southlake Residential Care Village, Eagle Terrace Long-Term Care Home and Mackenzie Place Long-Term Care are among nine long-term care facilities and retirement homes under COVID-19 protocols.

Aurora, East Gwillimbury and Georgina also had additional cases confirmed today as the number of cases in the northern portion of the region continue to grow

A frontline health-care worker is among the additional cases in Newmarket, the majority of which are males (60 per cent) and aged 55 to 64 (30 per cent).

Three Newmarket residents are now in ICU.

Of the 679 cases in York Region:

  • 320 are confirmed in Vaughan (+ 6 today), 8 deaths;
  • 157 in Markham (+ 2 today), 16 deaths;
  • 92 in Richmond Hill (- 1 today);
  • 47 in Newmarket (+ 9 today); 
  • 28 in Aurora (+ 4 today), 1 death;
  • 11 in Whitchurch-Stouffville;
  • 11 in King, 1 death;
  • 9 in East Gwillimbury (+ 1 today);
  • 4 in Georgina (+ 1 today).

The number of hospitalized patients in York Region increased from 41 to 45 today, with 23 cases critically ill in ICU.

As of 3:30 p.m. today, Southlake Regional Health Centre is reporting nine COVID-19 patients are in ICU, and six COVID-19 patients are in an inpatient unit. Fifteen patients are under investigation for COVID-19.

The total number of infected health-care workers, which may include physicians, nurses and paramedics, jumped from 47 to 51 today: six in Newmarket; one in Aurora, three in Whitchurch-Stouffville; five in Richmond Hill, 14 in Vaughan; and 21 in Markham.
