Ontario is expanding COVID-19 testing to pharmacies, but for now, a Markham pharmacy is the only one in York Region that will be offering testing when the expansion rolls out on Friday.
The Rexall at 90 Copper Creek Dr. in Markham is among the 60 pharmacies announced by Premier Doug Ford on Wednesday that will begin offering testing by appointment only as of Sept. 25. The majority of the pharmacies are in Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, and Ottawa, with one each in Markham and Huntsville included.
The province says more pharmacies will offer testing in the coming weeks. No specific timeline has been provided as of yet.
On Wednesday, Rexall and McKesson Canada Inc. announced that pharmacies under their banners – Guardian, IDA, the Medicine Shoppe and Remedy's Rx – will participate in COVID-19 testing for asymptomatic individuals by appointment only.
Shoppers Drug Mart is also offering COVID-19 testing in Toronto, Brampton, Mississauga, Ottawa and Huntsville as part of the province’s first phase of expanding testing to pharmacies.
The testing will only be offered to those not experiencing symptoms of the novel coronavirus.
