Two more Newmarket schools are reporting cases of COVID-19, Huron Heights Secondary School and Terry Fox Public School.

Two school-related cases are being reported at Huron Heights, the second high school in Newmarket with active cases, and two cases at Terry Fox, the first elementary school in Newmarket with cases, according to the York Region District School Board.

York Region Public Health is confirming one student case at Terry Fox that was not acquired at the school, and has placed the school under surveillance.

The cases at Huron Heights have yet to be confirmed by the public health unit as of Oct. 12.

The first school case in Newmarket was confirmed at Sir William Mulock Secondary School on Oct. 2.

The school board emphasizes that a positive case at a school does not mean the individual was exposed to COVID-19 at the school.

Families are being advised to refer to the letter sent from public health.

The public health unit will communicate directly with anyone who may have had contact with the case. If you are not contacted by public health, you are not considered a close contact.

As a precautionary measure, public health advises parents to watch for signs and symptoms of COVID-19, which can include a fever of 37.8C or higher, new or worsening cough, shortness of breath, sore throat or difficulty breathing, altered smell or taste, and runny nose.

Although less common, others signs and symptoms in children may include unexplained fatigue, worsening of chronic conditions, chills, headache, red/purple discoloration to hands, fingers, feet and/or toes, and pink eye.

York Region public health is currently reporting a total of 64 school-related cases to date, with 27 schools across the region under active surveillance
