23-year-old Vaughan man among 5 more COVID-19 deaths in York Region

Newmarket continues to see an increase in outbreak cases, up from 77 to 83 today — 63 per cent of its 132 cases

A 23-year-old Vaughan man is among five more COVID-19 deaths in York Region, as total cases reach 1,387.

The man died Thursday, April 23 at Etobicoke General Hospital of a close contact case confirmed positive April 1.

The fourth resident of Participation House in Markham died Friday, April 24 at Markham-Stouffville Hospital. York Region public health is no longer providing additional details of deaths that occur in smaller group home settings to protect the privacy of the individual.

Two more Markham residents of Markhaven Home for Seniors, where an outbreak was declared March 22, have passed away. A 77-year-old woman, who died April 24, tested positive April 4, after onset of symptoms March 21. An 88-year-old woman also died April 24, after testing positive April 21.

An 82-year-old Vaughan man passed away Friday, April 24 at Toronto General Hospital of a travel-acquired case confirmed March 26.

The region's number of COVID-19 related deaths has now reached 81, with the majority being residents of a long-term care or group home. The death toll associated with COVID-19 outbreaks in York Region increased from 52 to 55 today.

 

Forty-five new cases confirmed today brings the total number of cases to 1,387 in York Region.

 

Additional outbreaks, now totalling 36, have been declared at Vita Community Living Home Dufferin and Simmons, and Meta Centre Thornhill.

Forty-seven more residents, totalling 344, at long-term care and group homes in York Region have COVID-19, and 17 more health-care workers (not all of whom live in York Region) totalling 248.

The numbers will likely continue to rapidly increase as York Region is "aggressively moving forward" with the 5,000 COVID-19 tests required for all residents and staff at long-term care and group homes, according to medical officer of health Dr. Karim Kurji.

As of April 22, the Ministry of Health/Long-term Care requirement has mandated that all residents and staff — asymptomatic and symptomatic — of long-term care, retirement and group homes be tested for COVID-19.

Up by 57 cases since yesterday, 436 of York Region's COVID-19 cases — 31 per cent, the largest segment ― were acquired in an institutional outbreak. Close contact is the second largest cause of transmission, with 311 cases making up 22 per cent.

Newmarket continues to see an increase in outbreak cases, up from 77 to 83 today — 63 per cent of its cases.   

Two more confirmed COVID-19 cases bring Newmarket's total cases to 132. 

Resolved cases slowed their increase today, with 25 more cases today bringing the total to 436, or 31 per cent.

In Newmarket, two mores cases are resolved, now 28 of 132 cases.

Of 74 infected health-care workers: eight are in Newmarket; two in Aurora, three in Whitchurch-Stouffville; six in Richmond Hill, 21 in Vaughan; and 34 in Markham.

Of 1,387 cases in York Region:

  • 593 are confirmed in Vaughan (+ 10 today), 31 deaths, 242 resolved;
  • 342 in Markham (+ 11 today), 33 deaths, 84 resolved;
  • 143 in Richmond Hill (+ 5 today), 4 deaths, 66 resolved;
  • 132 in Newmarket (+ 2 today), 7 deaths, 28 resolved; 
  • 69 in Aurora (+ 11 today), 4 deaths, 19 resolved;
  • 30 in East Gwillimbury (+ 1 today), 6 resolved;
  • 28 in Georgina (+ 2 today), 2 resolved.
  • 27 in Whitchurch-Stouffville (+ 2 today), 8 resolved;
  • 21 in King (+ 1 today), 2 deaths, 12 resolved.

The number of hospitalized patients in York Region increased from 38 to 39 today, with 18 cases critically ill in ICU. 

As of 3:30 p.m. April 25, Southlake Regional Health Centre reported eight COVID-19 patients in ICU, and seven COVID-19 patients in inpatient units. The number of inpatients under investigation for COVID-19 is 16. Total deaths remain at five.
