Newmarket-Aurora has a new Green Party candidate as local David Jakubiec stepped into the role.

The developmental services worker is running in his first major political campaign and joined the race for the provincial election last week. The Newmarket resident has worked at L’Arche Daybreak, a Richmond Hill-based facility that helps adults with intellectual disabilities, for several years, according to his LinkedIn profile.

“David is passionate about social justice and mental health. He brings passion, loyalty, compassion, and empathy to his personal life, and professional life and will continue to do so, moving forward,” the Green Party of Ontario said.

A Green Party representative said Jakubiec is not currently available for interviews.

Jakubiec graduated from the Toronto Metropolitan University in social work. Beyond his social work career, he also was a facility operator and swim coach for Richmond Hill for more than a decade.

Jakubiec is a new candidate for the party, which ran student Carolina Rodriguez in the last provincial election in 2022. The party has come fourth in the riding in the past four elections, with Rodriguez getting 2,332 votes in 2022.

The candidate will be campaigning against incumbent Conservative Dawn Gallagher Murphy, Liberal Chris Ballard and NDP Denis Heng.
