An eight-week York Regional Police initiative aimed at deterring residential break-ins in the south end of York Region saw more than 3,000 door stoppers distributed, 24 arrests and 53 charges laid.

The door stoppers, or strike plates, to be secured to the front door of homes for added protection against forced entries, were distributed as part of Operation Strike Plate at town hall meetings hosted by the crime prevention unit, as well as given to residents in areas that had seen an increase in break and enters.

The initiative launched on March 4 resulted in 24 arrests and 53 charges laid, police said in a news release. An additional 47 bail compliance checks were conducted on individuals who had committed or were currently on charges for break-and-enter offences.

As well, postcards with safety messaging was distributed in residential areas, malls and grocery stores.

In comparison from 2023 to 2024, during the enforcement project period, there was a 20 per cent reduction in break and enters in the south end of York Region.
