Emergency crews responded to a commercial truck fire on Highway 48 on Tuesday.

A truck fire shut down northbound traffic on Highway 48 for several hours today in Georgina.

Emergency crews responded to a commercial truck fire at about 11 a.m. May 21 on the busy northbound lanes of Highway 48 near the intersection of Ravenshoe Road.

“It started smoking in the engine area and caught fire. Georgina Fire responded,” said Const. Nicola Morris.

Members of the Georgina Fire department extinguished the blaze. Crews shut down the highway for about two hours, rerouting drivers to other roads.

The highway was then intermittently reopened as a tow truck carried the vehicle away, and crews cleared up debris.

“The driver got out safely. The highway had to be closed for a few hours,” said Morris.
